The oasis are farmed in desert areas due to the presence of a source of water. In Tunisia, oasis are found in four governorates: Gabes, Gafsa, Tozeur and Kebili. The Tunisian oasis is rich in local plant genetic resources especially important given the nature of the climate of these regions. Potentially, the diversity of oasis may carry genes for tolerance to water stress, salt and thermal.
The main crop is the date palm and more than 260 varieties include. However, Tunisian oases are characterized by a strong monoculture variety Deglett Nour. Studies also interested pollinating male palm trees and a great diversity exists among this category.
Traditional oases are organized in three floors: an herbaceous floor, a fruit floor and upper floor of date palms. Thus, several fruit, wine local varieties of barley, pulses exist in the oasis.
The oasis is also a refuge for fauna consists of birds, snakes, scorpions, some carnivorous mammals, and invertebrates.
