Education and Awareness

Scientific and applied research

There is a strong awareness within the scientific community of the importance of local biodiversity. Several institutions of research and higher education are engaged in the study of biodiversity in different facets.

Several studies have concerned the study of the genetic diversity of several species or several genres, especially related to agro-diversity, the diversity of domestic animals or fish resources. Some work has also focused on the diversity of wild plants.

Education and awareness programs

Currently no strategy for environmental education and public awareness are taken. However, the National Agency of Environmental Protection is the main structure in charge of these issues.

The main activities undertaken by the Ministry for the Environment ANPE as part of the environmental awareness and education are:

Awareness activities:

  • Celebration of environmental and national days (Biodiversity Day, the day of the fight against desertification, wetlands, tree party ...)
  • Celebration of the National Day of Children
  • Celebration of the World Day and National Environment
  • Celebration of the World Day of Protection of the Ozone Layer
  • Demonstrations and awareness campaigns

Environmental education:

  • The Organizations training sessions,
  • The Organizations of the days of entertainment around the theme of the environment and environmental education,
  • The Organization of national competitions in the field of the environment,
  • The animation activities in rural areas by the mobile Club of the environment,
  • Strengthening educational institutions of teaching materials and equipment,
  • Elaboration of educational materials and outreach materials.

Also in the absence of strategies and programs dedicated to environmental education, the Ministry of Environment and under supervision structures, especially the ANPE, expect more and more on the younger segment of the population (young people, students, school children) through outreach activities oriented to the existing environment clubs in schools, children and youth. Indeed, several training sessions were organized for these target groups around issues related to the conservation and enhancement of biodiversity elements.

Media promotion

After the revolution of 14 January 2011, the environmental media landscape has been strengthened and has played a cutting edge role for the unveiling of multiple realities and facts in relation to several environmental issues including biodiversity and natural ecosystems.

This media effort is illustrated by emissions, written and audiovisual productions and other media that have been characterized quantitative and qualitative evolution. The media are increasingly called to participate in the anchorage more awareness of the issues and challenges, raise awareness about the need to adhere to environmental protection efforts and consecrate the culture of sustainable development in attitudes and behavior.

In the Similarly, it is clear that the strengthening of environmental assets and their preservation is a shared responsibility and a daily quest that requires the combined efforts of everyone, without exception, to achieve the set objectives. This involves essentially the root of environmental awareness among all citizens, spreading this awareness and environmental culture represents a major challenge and a condition for the respect of the environment is internalized by and all turns into a daily behavior and individual and collective practice, in line with the guidelines and national priorities in this area.

The Environmental information is passed from one easy isolated effort to an imperative which the answer to the challenges faced and the pressure of events. It became, as an important and decisive factor for the crystallization of a reflection and a mindset attuned to the orientations and choices at the national and global levels.


Awareness materials were produced by the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development in the form of base papers designed with teaching approaches aimed primarily at young people and school children.
